Have You Ever Noticed What Happens to Your Body When Life Gets Difficult?

Fear can make your heart race.

Stress can disturb your sleep and digestion.

Anxiety can change your breathing.

Excitement can make you feel full of energy.

A difficult relationship can leave you physically exhausted.

We often think of these as emotional experiences. But the body doesn’t make that distinction.

What we experience emotionally is also experienced physiologically.

This is where the chakra system becomes interesting.

🌀 The Chakra System: A Different Map of Human Experience

In the yogic tradition, chakras were never simply seven points or spinning wheels placed along the body.

They represent different dimensions of our human experience – beginning with survival and instinct, moving through desire and personal power, and opening into connection, expression, perception and expanded awareness.

Modern Science looks at the same human being through a very different lens.

The endocrine system is a network of glands that releases hormones into the body, influencing things like energy, metabolism, reproduction, sleep, mood and our response to stress.

Two different languages.

Two different maps.

And yet, there are some fascinating places where they seem to meet.

🧠 Fear, Stress & the Body’s Response

Think about fear.

When we feel threatened, the hypothalamus communicates with the pituitary gland, which signals the adrenal glands to release cortisol and other stress hormones.

This is part of what is called the HPA axis – hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal – one of the body’s central stress-response systems.

So the experience of “I don’t feel safe” isn’t happening only in the mind.

The whole body begins preparing to respond.

This is one reason the traditional association of Muladhara (root chakra) with safety, survival and grounding is so interesting.

🌈 The Chakras & Our Inner Experience

And the pattern continues upward.

Svadhisthana (sacral chakra) is associated with sexuality, pleasure and creativity.

Manipura (solar plexus) with personal power, confidence, action and our ability to meet life.

Anahata (heart) with connection and openness.

Vishuddhi (throat) with expression and communication.

Ajna (third e)ye with perception and insight.

Crown with expanded awareness.

Modern interpretations of healing and wellness often place these alongside different endocrine glands and physiological functions.

But here’s where we need to be careful and clear about.

⚖️ A Chakra Is Not a Gland

A chakra is not a gland.

Yoga does not describe the endocrine system in the way modern science does, and science has not established chakras as physical organs or proven that individual chakras control particular glands.

The value isn’t in trying to make the two systems identical.

It’s in recognising what they may each help us see.

🔬 What Modern Biology Shows Us

Modern biology shows us that our experiences can influence the nervous and endocrine systems, and that when stress becomes chronic, it can affect sleep, metabolism, immunity, cardiovascular health, energy and mood.

The ancient traditions approached the same human being from another direction, exploring how our inner state, vitality, emotions and consciousness shape the way we experience ourselves and the world.

They are very different maps and very different languages with a vast difference in how they describe it.

But both point us towards something we now increasingly are beginning to understand:

We cannot completely separate the mind from the body.

🔄 The Conversation Between Mind & Body

A thought can change the breath.

The breath can influence the nervous system.

The nervous system can influence hormones.

Hormones can influence mood, energy and behaviour.

And our behaviour, relationships and environment feed the cycle right back.

Perhaps this is why working with ourselves cannot be reduced to either the body or the mind.

The chakra system gives us a language for exploring our inner experience.

Modern biology gives us another language for understanding some of the physical processes underneath it.

Neither has to replace the other.

Perhaps the real intelligence lies in understanding the conversation between them.
